Designed for TM Integral Logistics Service Company, this office made from shipping containers is situated in Miami, US. Argentinean-based Reale Arquitectos/ Reale Architects and associates were the architectural firm responsible for designing and building it (build still in progress as at Nov 2020). The total size of the building is 135SQM / 443 ft2.
Build Method
This stylish office building is made from four upcycled shipping containers. Two 20ft(6M) containers are made to stand vertical, and two 40ft (12M) containers lie horizontally. They are strategically placed to enjoy the ocean views and provide decent spaces for formal meetings.
“The shipping containers office building is a project in which we have responded to the premises of the client, creating flexible workspaces, upcycling four container structures (2x20 feet and 2x40 feet), respectively”.
From concept stage, the builders had sustainability in mind. The use of recycled containers, use of solar panels, greywater treatment, garden terraces, rainwater harvesting, etc. are all well thought out. The roof is angled, so the panels face north where the sun is at its brightest in the southern hemisphere. They can also rotate at a 45-degree angle and keep up with the sun as it travels across the sky.
On the north side, deep overhangs provide solar protection for the inside of the building, so it keeps the summer heat down and lessens the load on the air conditioner, saving energy. The all-white painting and low E Glass system also help cool and protect from the intense Miami heat.
Also, to avoid unnecessary water consumption, the green roof terrace has the ability to harvest rainwater and recycle it later.
“The modularity and the final disposition of our work allowed us to achieve wide spaces and good visuals (avoiding the feeling of confinement generated by the boxes’ original dimensions). Helping at the same time to nucleate the wet areas and technical rooms. Giving rise to the incorporation of sustainability and energy efficiency criteria, such as solar energy self-generation, water heating panels, garden terraces, rain, and greywater harvesting, and the solar analysis for the orientation of the building according to the region where it will be finally assembled.”
It should be noted that the structures did not need to be transported since they were part of the “out of service” stock of the owner company.”
Interbode Thoughts
It’s definitely not the first cargotecture designed for a logistics company we’ve seen, but this example is excellent. Ground floor meeting rooms and reception, upstairs work and an airy top deck for entertainment – this design would be equally at home servicing a residential build, particularly if you needed to elevate to obtain decent views.
Its stark white walls might be a little to “Miami” for everyone’s taste, but we could move the Interbode office here happily and be a little inspiration for other businesses that are still lagging behind in the sustainability game.

Grillagh Water House, is sited on Banks of the ‘Grillagh River’ to locals known as Pixies Paradise. It's owner is a young Architect Patrick Bradley and he was recently featured on the channel 4 show “Grand Designs”. This design has quickly become a symbol for Cargotecture and has inspire many to join the following. Patrick Bradley, a countryman and an Architect, had a vision to build a modern farmhouse on this own farm under local legislation allowing farms to build on buildings on their land. Price played a large part in Patrick's decision to convert the shipping containers in to a home.
