The Urban Rigger is located in the harbour of Copenhagen, Denmark comprising 9 floating recycled shipping containers, stacked on a concrete foundation to make sudent housing. Designed by Bjarke Ingels, a Danish architect, founder and creative partner of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). In 2006 he founded BIG, which grew to a staff of 400 by 2015. Since 2009, Ingels has won numerous awards and architectural competitions. He moved to New York City in 2012.

The Urban Rigger is a student housing apartment swaying on the harbour of Denmark.“Living on a houseboat is a truly amazing experience that not many students in Copenhagen get opportunity to experience.” A student exclaims.

“It’s so cool as a student to be able to say you live in a place where the most sustainable technology is put to use.” Another student shares.

The students share that they believe living in a sustainable place is very important to them.

Architect Bjarke Ingels explains why he built Urban Rigger on the water:

“Around the city not only do you have pockets or space but you also have pockets of time. Before this can become a new neighbourhood of Copenhagen, they solve a lot of question like what are we doing with city that can take 10 or 30 years. So Urban Rigger is this kind of Nomadic form of urbanism that can actually occupy pockets of time so when the people know what they want to do with this neighbourhood then these industrial ports can move and create a neighbourhood somewhere else.”

Build Method

The structure is made up of nine High Cube 40ft containers that are stacked and cantilevered so they are faced towards one another, creating a little central oasis while ensuring the privacy and intimacy. Unlike many places this home lies buoyant on the harbour. The water so fresh that many of the students jump in for a swim from the house. The Rigger consists of 12 apartments each complete with a kitchen, bathroom and windows floor to ceiling. Below the sea level lays a large basement, movie rooms and lockers for the students.

Interbode Thoughts

Traditional construction costs for student housing cost $80,000 per individual bed but the Urban Rigger offers 12 units that come in for a price of $20,000 per room. What we like most about this awesome design that shows off the possibilities of living on water so well. A spacious yet affordable, nomadic home.
