The Santa Maria house built in 2013 is a timber clad beauty and is most pretty with the lights on at night. Located in Santa María, Chile,  designed by Architects: Etcheberrigaray + Matuschka,  the house is located on land originally used for farming, set amongst fruit trees and blends well with the surrounding nature.

Build Method

Built using 2x 20ft (6M) and 2 x 40ft (12M) containers, this light touch construction does not alter the natural condition of its surrounds. The architects work on a platform with a new level + -0.00, which, together with easing the construction, raises the view to the ground level of the trees.

“The fruit trees are irrigated by canals that flood the field in a controlled way. Thus, the house is built on pilotis to insulate it from moisture and make the house’s thermal insulation more efficient, allowing it to ventilate and insulate the floor structure’s underside.”

To the frame fruit trees’ views, the northeast orientation provides the more significant percentage of the house’s glazed facade, along with the east front that overlooks the neighboring lands.

The southwest facade is designed as an opaque wall that holds all the furniture developed in the project - parallel to the house’s central axis, closets, master vanity, desk, buffet furniture, kitchen, and pantry, are all designed as essentially a single piece of furniture.

Spatially, the house is divided into main two zones to maintain continuity in space. Social and service areas are in the space with higher ceilings, and in other zones a lower height space holds the bedrooms and

“Like our other project in Casablanca, …  we sought to design an efficient and simple house, in terms of use and construction process. This time, we only changed finishes using the same metal structure, a dry construction system that allows great flexibility in the type of cladding and insulation types required.”

Interbode Thoughts

This simple house would make a great weekend getaway on a piece of open land in which neighbours weren’t a concern or privately facing a view with your neighbours positioned behind you.  We like its use of timber cladding, especially on the rear giving it a monolithic feel.
