Nestled in the rugged terrain of Boulder, Colorado, Sugar Loaf Cabin is a striking example of off-grid living, seamlessly integrating sustainability with modern design. Designed and built by Tomecek Studio, this mountain retreat leverages the efficiency and strength of cargotecture, offering a compact yet highly functional space for remote living.

Build Method

Constructed using three 40ft High Cube shipping containers, the home is designed to maximise space while maintaining a minimal footprint. The containers are strategically arranged to create a central living area flanked by private spaces, optimising both functionality and views of the surrounding landscape.

Floor-to-ceiling glass panels punctuate the otherwise industrial steel structure, flooding the interior with natural light and connecting the cabin to its natural surroundings. The home is elevated slightly off the ground to reduce site disturbance and improve insulation. Clad in a combination of corten steel and reclaimed wood, the exterior balances durability with a natural aesthetic, allowing the structure to blend harmoniously into its mountainous backdrop.

The interior maintains a warm and minimalist approach, featuring plywood-lined walls, polished concrete floors, and custom-built furniture that make the most of the limited space. A wood-burning stove serves as the heart of the home, providing warmth and a cosy ambience during Colorado’s colder months.

Interbode Thoughts

Sugar Loaf Cabin is a compelling example of how shipping containers can be repurposed into a comfortable, efficient, and beautifully designed retreat. The juxtaposition of industrial elements with natural materials creates a space that feels both rugged and refined.

We particularly admire the way the large glass openings frame the surrounding landscape, making nature an integral part of the living experience. The off-grid capabilities and thoughtful use of space make it an inspiring model for sustainable, remote living. A perfect escape for those seeking solitude without sacrificing modern comforts.
