Athens–based Cocoon Modules and the Greek mattress brand Coco-Mat, are responsible for making this 40-foot shipping container home.  This prototype is available for viewing at COCO-MAT's headquarters in Kifissia, Greece and is the cargo-child of Nastazia Spyropoulou a Greek Architect.

 Build  Method

The “Cocoon Modules-Tiny Nomadic Container Home with Green Roof prototype” is made from a single 40-foot (12M) High Cube ISO shipping container topped by a green roof and able to run on or off-the-grid.

The homes front door if you like is a large set of double sliding glass opening along the extended 12M façade. Outside the unit is clad is insulated and clad in soft wood timber, although the architect notes that future modules might use a more stable hardwood.  The tiny home is well-insulated, and the living roof provides an additional layer of insulation, so the temperature remains stable most of the year.

Inside, the unit houses everything one would find in a regular-sized holiday apartment with plenty of storage and beautiful wood finishes.  Space is split between a bedroom on one end (fold up full size queen bed), a living room with a large L-shaped couch (also creating a second guest bed with storage underneath) and shelving, a small dining area, a kitchenette with adequate overhead storage shelves, and a bathroom on the opposite end of the container fully tiled with a separate shower cubicle. For a single unit High Cube, it’s a smart design!

In the bedroom, the original container cargo doors open up the bedroom to the outside, keeping an industrial feel and in contrast to the slick modern interior.  The prototype has been furnished with Coco-mat's line of wooden furniture and linens.

'Our modules are more than 15% cheaper than the prefabricated construction in Greece and 30% cheaper than the traditional,' explains the design team at Cocoon Modules. 'they can be built within weeks in designated industrial spaces and can then be transported and placed on site. Using the container's modularity, we create ergonomic areas of great design that can be expanded as legos do '.

A ship's ladder is attached at the back of the container to access the green roof. The Cocoon Module prototype comprises total habitable space of 320 sq ft (29SQM) as standard and this module starts at 19,500 EURO.

 Interbode Thoughts

Nastazia got this single unit dwelling’s design right. This house would be a perfect holiday unit. Its off-grid and on-grid capabilities make it an eco-friendly and low-cost living. In addition to the simple smart design, we like that it comes complete with electric safety shutters and the original cargo doors, so that this unit can be shut down whilst the owners are away and made very secure.
