Hong Kong-based architectural firm A Work of Substance (a multidisciplinary branding and design agency) has recently transformed four shipping containers into a funky two-story office suite. Situated in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, the project was commissioned by Chinese logistics company Goodman Westlink to be used as their marketing suite.
Build Method
The suite's six different spaces are formed by four 20 foot (6M) High Cube ISO shipping containers, creating a building that can be collapsed and transported, leaving a minimal imprint on the landscape.
The architects built the marketing suite by joining three shipping containers on the lower level and stacking the fourth container above. The lower level containers are raised slightly off the ground, eliminating moisture issues but also making the structure seem to float despite a solid 50 SQM base.
The architects chose to add a fifth interior space by enclosing an upper deck off the second level container with a large glass atrium. The opposite side of the upper level also boasts a large outdoor terrace.
The lower level can be used for board meetings or transformed into a large open space for functions or marketing events and can be walled off with a slide tiered door panel. A steel-framed wooden staircase leads to the second level, featuring the glass atrium and open workspace for a quiet working zone or smaller meetings. A combination of timber (including the predominant ply lined interior) and glass softens the aesthetics markedly.
"We maximized the opportunity to have extensive glass openings, which allows potential clients to have an overview of the surrounds," says A Work of Substance. "The layering of timber and glass softens the features of an inherently industrial product, establishing harmony amongst nature while bringing in light and tropical backdrops into space."
Interbode Thoughts
Container offices are a great building product for a logistics company. We like the open, timber lined interior spaces combined with the large glass feature-walls creating a serene building with a tangible relationship with its surrounds.
